Mejeriet i Torup is an adaptation and reuse of a 600 m² former dairy, later artist studio and residence, into a cultural centre for art, performance, and community. The project preserves the industrial and artistic character of the existing building while introducing minimal, carefully placed interventions that enable new functions and connections.

The Hedeskov Centre for Regenerative Practice Living Lab is the transformation of a former rural school in Djursland through a tectonic and bio-regional approach, embedding the building within its geological and ecological context. The project embraces the principle of ‘making good,’ prioritizing repair, material circularity, and the integration of hyper-local and up-cycled materials over demolition and new construction.

Djernes & Bell is an architectural practice based in Copenhagen with a special interest in what already exists: built, material, human, and natural. Founded in 2020 by architects Justine Bell and Jonas Djernes, the practice builds on the partners’ 15+ years experience working with transformation and restoration projects in Denmark and the UK.
Djernes & Bell work to preserve and improve existing built, natural, and social structures through reparative design, careful restoration, and the use of low-carbon materials. Cross-disciplinary methods fuse artistic and scientific research—from ancient crafts to ecological innovation. Intersecting material science, traditional building knowledge, and nature-based design, the practice transforms buildings and landscapes with the aim of supporting life in all its forms.
Collaborating across scientific, artistic, and civic sectors, Djernes & Bell bring extensive experience in adaptive reuse and transformation, working across both rural and urban contexts.

Djernes & Bell work across all stages of a project—from early concept and feasibility to detailed design, construction, and long-term adaptation. Architectural services include the reparative transformation and restorative reuse of existing buildings, as well as landscape strategies and low-carbon new construction systems. Each project is developed with a deep sensitivity to context, history, materials, and use, resulting in spatial solutions that are technically rigorous, materially grounded, and culturally meaningful.
Work often begins with strategic analysis, participatory workshops, and feasibility studies that bring users, stakeholders, and local communities into the design dialogue. This early-stage approach ensures that spatial strategies are rooted in real needs and the actual possibilities of a given site, creating long-term social and ecological value.
Alongside architectural design, Djernes & Bell engage in cross-disciplinary research into materials, agro-ecology, nature-based solutions, and restorative value chains. Material mapping, hands-on workshops, and experimental prototyping are used to develop innovative approaches to construction—from biobased materials and circular systems to the revival of traditional craft techniques.
Projects span both rural and urban contexts and often sit at the intersection of built environment, landscape, and community life. The aim is to create architecture that supports ecological resilience, strengthens local cultures, and enables places where life—human and more-than-human—can thrive.

Rubjerg Knude Fyr - Of time sand
Rubjerg, Denmark
Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse was built in 1900 as a fixed point in a shifting landscape. Over the following century, the advancing dunes swallowed the surrounding buildings and threatened the tower itself — until in 2019 the lighthouse was moved 70 metres inland by mason Kjeld Pedersen, a feat of precise local craftsmanship that secured its survival. The move, combined with decades of weathering and use, left the interior stair beyond repair. Earlier, in 2016, JAJA Architects had reactivated the lighthouse with a temporary steel stair and kaleidoscopic lantern — proving the site's enduring cultural relevance, and leaving behind a steel structure that would become the material foundation of what came next. The Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen Vendsyssel), supported by Realdania, initiated an invited competition for a permanent new stair and restored lantern.
Our proposal, Tiden & Sandet (Of Time & Sand), takes the deep geological narrative of the site as its point of departure. The lighthouse is understood as a vertical extension of the cliff — a human-made continuation of the forces that have shaped this coastal landscape across millions of years. Stone and sand are the same matter in different states: the new stair is formed from the same minerals — quartz, feldspar, mica — that compose the cliff itself, and the glass of the restored lantern is melted sand. The stair becomes an architectural echo of geology, where material returns to itself in refined form.
The stair is a true cantilever construction — The result is a self-supporting spiral with no central column, no intermediate structure, and no complex jointing — a system proven in Danish lighthouse stairs for over three centuries, requiring minimal maintenance and capable of standing for hundreds of years. Stone chosen from already-quarried and stockpiled Nordic sources requires minimal further processing and has an extremely low CO₂ footprint. Its patina deepens with use and weathering; the stair will be more beautiful in a century than on the day it is built.
Viable existing steel from JAJA's construction is reused and worked locally. Cut, bent, and welded using classical smithing techniques — without remelting, which would consume large amounts of energy and erase the material's history — the steel is transformed into benches in the entrance hall, balustrades along the stair, a new folded entrance stair that accommodates the shifting sand level, and a sheltering canopy at the doorway. The material lineage of the lighthouse — chalk, cliff, masonry, JAJA's steel — is not erased but carried forward, layer by layer. The combined climate impact of natural stone and reclaimed steel is up to 90% lower than a conventional concrete or steel construction.
Inside the lighthouse a new spatial rhythm of ascent and pause emerges, designed to be welcoming and legible to all visitors regardless of mobility. The entrance hall — generous, light-filled, with a ceiling height of 4.6 metres — allows visitors to inhabit the lighthouse's layered history without necessarily climbing: historical drawings, geological sections, and the recovered lens displayed on the wall, with benches of reclaimed steel offering a place to rest and look upward through the full height of the tower. A new circular window opens the original curved masonry opening that once connected the tower to the lighthouse keeper's quarters, giving light and a framed view out across the dunes to visitors who choose not to climb. Widened landings at every level create space to pause, step aside, and look out through reopened windows. The former fog horn opening is reinstated as a sheltered viewing alcove with panoramic views towards the North Sea. At the top, a new skylight in the lantern's crown draws light down through every level, so the full vertical sweep of the tower can be sensed from the moment of arrival. The lighthouse is experienced as one whole — from the cliff to the horizon.
Tiden & Sandet gives the lighthouse a new cycle, rooted in the cliff and in human community. A lighthouse for the forces of nature. A lighthouse for history. A lighthouse for everyone.
